It’s a great and rare sight when you visit a football manager who can’t stop grinning. This was most certainly the case when Saturday Sport’s Steve Prout recently visited Danny Robinson at his new home, Hungerford Town FC.
First of all Steve asked Danny about his move from Thatcham, he said:
I was quite happy at Thatcham, I had a 2 year contract extension on the table, we were just trying to get the pre-season budget sorted out, I was never looking at leaving Thatcham, we had come so far with the FA Vase final. I was then offered the chance to manage a National League team, which I really could not turn down. Within 10 days of my contract ending I was here at Hungerford.
They then discussed the very odd year that we have had so far, Danny said:
We had 3 or 4 games called off due to the awful wet weather at the start of the year, I then remember we were away at Froome when the game was abandoned at half time! Then of course we had the Covid situation, which of course makes you want to put people’s safety and wellbeing above everything else
Robbo has kept in some great players, including James Rusby & Mike Jones, as well as bringing in new players that he has previously worked with including Matt Partridge, Callum Willmoth, Kyle Tooze & Curtis Angell.
About the challenge ahead of him, Danny said:
It’s a big leap not just for me but also the players, one thing is, I am a good judge of character. All the players have amazing ability, although if you sink you sink, if you swim you swim. I am very keen to play the teams in this league, having family in Essex I am keen to get over to Chelmsford & Billericay.
The one thing that strikes you when you enter the ground is just how good it is looking, they have recently had working parties of 20 or more, including some players, all playing their part in getting the ground ready for when the new season begins. Danny finished by saying:
All credit to the Chairman, Patrick and his wife, the club is like a family, we are all in this together.
