There’s a lot of events taking place over the next 10 days across West Berkshire – here’s a roundup of what’s happening.
Bootleg Blondie, reported to be the worlds number one Blondie tribute act, are at Arlington Arts on Saturday night (28th May) from 8pm. Tickets in advance from Arlington-arts.com
The Gingerbread Man is coming to Newbury – on Saturday and Sunday, 28th and 29th May, see The Gingerbread man at Corn Exchange… Its the adventure of the deliciously smelling Gingerbread Man who finds his feet fast and sets off on the journey of a lifetime!
Up and down and into town, our Gingerbread Man must use his wits to escape anyone who finds him tasty. Is he faster than a Goose? Can he cross a river using a Fox as a raft? Are Gingerbread Men even allowed on trains?

Kennet Radio is at the Jubilee Beacon Lighting in Victoria Park in Newbury on the evening of Thursday June 2nd from 7pm. There will be food available for purchase and a funfair for the children, or bring a picnic for a great evening of entertainment. The beacon will be lit at 9:30pm and the event will continue to 10pm.
There’s a Jubilee Beacon in Hungerford, on Thursday 2nd June. Join the excitement at the Triangle Field at 9.45pm for the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon. As theirs is lit, hundreds of other communities throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories and the Commonwealth will be doing so simultaneously. The bar at the Rugby Club opens at 8pm, and food is available too.
In Thatcham there is a Beacon Lighting ceremony on the evening of Thursday 2 June at Dunstan Green Park. The events kick off at 8:30pm including stilt walkers, and dancers. Families will be able to make a commemorative item and refreshments will also be available. After the 9.45pm Beacon Lighting there will be a six-minute fireworks display choreographed to music presented by UK Fireworks.
West Berks Ballet School is performing Sleeping Beauty on 4th & 5th June, back at Arlington Arts – There are 3 performances in total and tickets are available in advance from Arlington-arts.com
Yattendon & Frilsham Village Fete is returning to Yattendon on Saturday 4th June between 1 and 4:30pm. They’ll have Rock Choir, May Pole dancing, Morris dancers, Bouncy Castle, vintage cars and more.
Lots of casual food and drinks options will be available including the traditional hog roast and barbeque or you can sit down to afternoon tea and enjoy homemade cakes. There’s a cupcake baking competition and lots of other contests including welly wanging and Christmas tree throwing.
Back in Hungerford On Sunday 5 June between 2pm and 7pm you can join in the celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee. Bring your picnic and chairs, and enjoy activities, stalls, competitions and live music too. It all takes place on Croft Field – there is something for everyone including a make and bake competition – If you’d like to enter, take your entries to the Jubilee tent at the Food & Artisan Market in the Croft Field between 10am and 1pm on Sunday 5 June!
And why not enjoy a canal cruise – over the long Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend from Thursday 2 June to 5 June, there will be extra trips on the narrowboat “Jubilee” departing at noon, 2pm and 4pm from Newbury Wharf for a 75-minute relaxing trip through historic Newbury with plenty of interest to see as we rise up Newbury lock and cruise through the swing-bridge at West Mills.
Adults £8, Children (2-15) £5, Children under 2 free. All profits go to the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust to protect, enhance and promote the canal. It is advised to book tickets in advance online at jubilee.katrust.org.uk
And finally, there’s a Quiz, Auction and raffle to raise funds for Ukraine DEC. It’s taking place on FRIDAY JUNE 10TH from 7-9.30 pm at Ace Space on St Nicholas Rd in Newbury.
