Newbury Council has announced that 2 mew pear trees have been snapped at the base and destroyed beyond saving by vandals within 24 hours of planting them.
The trees were planted as part of the tree replacement and expansion programme which included the two young pear trees. The Town Council paid for the trees from the Community Infrastructure Levies, collected from developers and West Berkshire Council covered the costs of the planting.
Cllr Adrian Edwards, Leader of the Council said: “Newbury Town Council is committed to continuing to make Newbury a better place to live, work and visit and the tree-planting programme is part of our commitment. Planting trees is a precious gift from us to future generations and this vandalism is such a disappointment. The trees did not stand a chance having been broken off at the base. I would urge anyone with any information who may have done this to contact the Police”.
